Design Caucus submissions due Monday Aug 25th

08/21/2008

Would you like your FileMaker work reviewed in the next SmallCo Design Caucus? Read on...
The Design Caucus returns Thursday, August 28th at 3 pm Eastern Time (UTC - 4). Our theme is "New Beginnings," and we'd like to see how you redesigned the first screen of an application.

Perhaps your app starts with a list view, but you found a better way to sort or filter that list so that the most important new records are visible. Maybe you've implemented a dashboard to replace that crusty old main menu. Or you might have implemented session variables, to return users to the same screen they last visited. If you'd like to show your work off to a hundred close friends, and to many others who watch the recording of the caucus online, here's what to do:

1. Send a one-sentence summary of who uses this application, and for what. In a second sentence, describe the tasks that people want to do first thing in their workday. Succinctness and clarity count!

2. Give us two screenshots, one from BEFORE the redesign of your New Beginning, and one from AFTER. By sending these images, you give us the right to show the screens in the caucus. Make sure you have your clients' permission..

Put this all in an email with the subject "New Beginnings", and email it to caucus@smallco.net by Monday Aug. 25th. Make sure to tell us who you are and where you work, and give us a phone number or Skype address to reach you. We will select six entries to review in the Design Caucus, and we'll notify the winning entrants by Wednesday evening at 6 pm Eastern Time.

We'll spend the caucus reviewing these six entries, and at the end we'll vote for the Best New Beginnings in 3 categories:

1. Best Bang for the Buck: the smallest change that afforded the biggest improvement for the user.
2. More Than Skin Deep: the layout redesign that best expresses the user's world.
3. Why Didn't I Think Of That?: the most creative re-thinking of an app's first screen.

This caucus is sure to be a lot of fun! Hope you can join us, and I look forward to your submissions!

Albert

.com Solutions Inc. Releases FmPro Migrator 4.36 With New Bento to FileMaker Pro Migration Feature

08/13/2008

Fremont, CA - .com Solutions Inc. Releases FmPro Migrator 4.36 With New Bento to FileMaker Pro Migration Feature

.com Solutions Inc. announces the immediate availability of FmPro Migrator 4.36, which was previously announced at the FileMaker DevCon 2008 in Phoenix, July 13 - 17, 2008. FmPro Migrator 4.36 includes a new Bento to FileMaker migration feature for converting Bento Libraries, data and Forms into FileMaker Pro database files. This new Bento conversion feature is compatible with FileMaker Pro 7, 8 and 9 database files. Bento users can easily convert existing Bento databases into secure, multi-user, cross-platform FileMaker Pro solutions.

Even though Bento only runs on Mac OS X Leopard, FmPro Migrator is able to perform the migration process on either Mac OS X (10.3 or higher) or Windows. FmPro Migrator directly reads the database structure, data, relationships and forms within the contents of any Bento backup file to perform the migration. Users merely need to drag and drop the Bento backup file onto FmPro Migrator to start the migration process.

FileMaker developers can quickly prototype new solutions using the stylish look and feel of the built-in Bento themes. Bento can be used to speed development with quick prototyping of GUI interfaces due to its auto-alignment of fields and labels. Developers can spend less time moving, aligning, or colorizing objects and let Bento perform this tedious work automatically. Need to change a form to use a different theme? Just change the theme for any of your Bento forms, create a Bento backup file, and drag & drop the new backup file onto FmPro Migrator. FmPro Migrator will then instantly read the Bento backup file and convert all the Bento forms into new FileMaker Pro layouts. The new layouts can either be manually copied from FmPro Migrator to FileMaker Pro, or copied in an automated manner using FmPro Migrator Developer Edition using QuicKeys/WinAutomation scripts.

FmPro Migrator Developer Edition includes all the features of FmPro Migrator, but also includes FileMaker Table Consolidation, and automation of the relationship and layout creation process on Mac OS X and Windows.

FmPro Migrator’s Bento to FileMaker Conversion Features Include:

• Bento Form to FileMaker Layout Conversion - FmPro Migrator builds a new FileMaker layout for each user-defined form within the Bento database. Each layout is created to match the theme used on the original Bento form. Field labels are arranged to the left of each field, with the original field background color and text font.

• Related URL/Email/Media Tables - Within Bento, user-defined Libraries are stored as individual tables within a SQLite database file. These tables may contain columns referencing related tables containing URLs, email addresses, Mac OS X file paths and media file paths. FmPro Migrator captures and recreates these related tables and relationships within the FileMaker Pro database file. The related records for URL, IM and Email lists are displayed within portals on the new FileMaker Pro layout.

• Data Transfer - Clicking a single transfer button in FmPro Migrator transfers the data stored within each individual table from Bento into the new FileMaker Pro database.

• Counter and Auto-Enter SN Fields - Bento includes user-defined Counter and hidden Primary Key fields which are converted into FileMaker Pro Auto-Enter SN# fields. The Auto-Enter Next Value parameter is automatically read from the Bento SQLite database file for creation of the new field within the FileMaker Pro database. Each of these field creation attributes are automatically created by pasting the table definitions from FmPro Migrator into FileMaker Pro Advanced.

• Quickly Prototype Professional-Looking FileMaker Layouts with Bento - FileMaker developers can quickly prototype new solutions using the stylish look and feel of the built-in Bento themes. Bento can be used to speed development with quick prototyping of GUI interfaces due to its auto-alignment of fields and labels.

• Upsize Bento Databases to FileMaker Pro - Upgrading Bento databases to FileMaker Pro provides enhancements to performance, cross-platform compatibility, ScriptMakerTM scripting, security and multi-user capabilities. Up to 9 users can share a single file using FileMaker Pro 9 peer to peer networking, which is expandable to 250 FileMaker Pro client users when using FileMaker Server or 100 web users when using FileMaker Server Advanced.

Existing FmPro Migrator customers can upgrade to FmPro Migrator 4.36 at no charge. The single-user licensing includes a copy of FmPro Migrator for both Mac OS X (Universal Binary) and Windows platforms. FmPro Migrator customers may upgrade to FmPro Migrator Developer Edition for $100.

Plug-in directory now open for business

Orlando, FL - May 19 2008 - Plug-in directory now open for business

http://www.fmpug.com/resourcedirectory.php

One of the brilliant aspects of FileMaker as an application is that it can be shaped, molded and/or morphed into a solution that meets the needs of countless companies, across a myriad of industries. At its most fundamental level, FileMaker is what you make of it; it serves as the foundational building block to your solution.

Most would agree a strong foundation is an absolutely essential facet to building a robust solution. But often times the key to getting your solution to “sing” isn’t about FileMaker at all. It’s implementing products that work with FileMaker to expand its structural capabilities.

These products, better known as plug-ins, have a broad range of applications — integration, migration, separation, optimization, oversight, security, etc— the list is ever changing and expanding to meet the needs of the community.

Taking our cue from The Everything Reference this newly opened section of the FMPug Resource Directory outlines a host of manufacturers who develop and maintain some of the most widely utilized plug-ins in the FileMaker industry. It’s through these companies (and your brilliant skills as a developer) that your clients’ wish list can become a reality. Instead of the generic listing by plug-in name or company we decided to use the format that has been so successful in The Everything Reference and break the plug-ins down by category. So if you are looking for an audit logging, credit card processing, email sending , quickbooks linking, remote script triggering plug-in... we have you covered.

All listings include; Supported Platform, FileMaker Version Support, Server Side Compatibility, Leopard Compatibility & Vista Compatibility. Also if the vendor is part of the FMPug discount program you will see a "Save" tag and in the run-up to Devcon '08 we have listed all vendors that will be present in the showcase. More data is being added to include detailed product description, screenshots (if applicable).

[ A CALL TO PLUG-IN MANUFACTURERS ]

Are you updating your product line for DevCon '08? Are you planning on releasing new plug-ins at DevCon '08? We are working on The Everything Reference Edition 2 for release at DevCon '08 and want to ensure we have the most up to date product information available. Please get in touch if you are not listed in the plug-in directory or if you are making changes.

Custom Web Publishing (CWP) carries with it inherent vulnerabilities for the exposure of any credentials a user enters into a browser’s credentials dialog box. As a result, developers likely should follow a restrictive policy for these credentials. Circumstances and attendant adverse impact will vary from situation to situation. The bottom line however is this: CWP credentials are subject to being intercepted and retained without any warning to users and without any knowledge that a breach has occurred.

Many thanks to Steven Blackwell for writing this article and choosing to publish it through FMPug.

DevCon 2008 Free Conference Pass Drawing & More

DevCon 2008 Free Conference Pass Drawing & More

05/06/2008

You read the announcements, you voted on our poll and now the time has come to announce who's heading to DevCon courtesy of that old pot-bellied Uncle whose kisses are always too slobbery, Uncle FMPug.

See the HTML version at http://www.fmpug.com/devcon.php

When we devised the contest, it was our hope that a handful of members would weave a tale or two worth reading. As time marched forward, entries flooded in, ending in a grand total of 358 contestants! Never anticipated were the number of entrants who embraced their inner-author and spun tales worthy of news rack magazine glory. Whittling down these fantastic fables took an entire Sunday afternoon and entirely too many refills of caffeinated Mango Iced Tea. Methodically, 358 was reduced to 70, and lastly, in honor of FileMaker 9, down to the top 9 contestants. That's when the hard times grew even harder. Hopped-up on fruity tea and armed with boldly colored Sharpie markers, the stories were dissected, debated, disputed and ranked from five, down to three, and finally, the winner was chosen.

Congratulations, Martha Zink, the winner of the free conference pass to the 2008 DevCon! Well done!

After a long arduous journey, read how Martha and FileMaker have rekindled the romance in their lives. A truly motivating tale of hardship and relational perseverance!

Read Martha's entry at http://fmpug.com/members_download.php? filename=devconpass_winner.pdf&free=true

Now wait, don't leave yet, we're not quite done

After reading these stories, it was unanimously decided to pay homage to these top tale tellers, to reward them for their time, their effort and their outpouring of support for FMPug. Good ole Uncle FMPug has decided to reach deep into his leisure suit pockets and dole out some dough for the four runners-up. Each of the Top 5 contestants will be awarded some of Uncle Pug's hard-earned dough to help with those pesky DevCon expenses. Spend your winnings in the showcase, at the hotel (bar), at the spa (bar, check), at the (lobby) bar, at the pool (bar), at one of the restaurant (bars), or maybe perhaps the mini-bar --- the choice is yo! urs, we certainly would never attempt to sway your decision. Each stor y is fantastic, not to mention fantastical, and guarantees an entertaining read. So take a moment to take-in what some creative FMPuggers have written.

2nd Place, Larry Schultz (http://fmpug.com/members_download.php? filename=devconpass_grooveback.pdf&free=true)

Prize: $400 USD

Read the laugh-out-loud ranked ranting from Larry, who like Stella, is gunning to get his groove back...at DevCon. This is a guy who openly refuses to let age (or ! arthritis) stand in his way when it comes to rocking-out like an aged hipster on the drums. Keep your eyes peeled attendees, you'll read how to find Larry at DevCon
he'll be the guy in the corridor chanting about feet and a pug. Great stuff!

3rd Place, Bob Shockey (http://fmpug.com/members_download.php? filename=devconpass_guynoir.pdf&free=true)
Prize: $300 USD

Read Bob's tongue- and-cheek tribute to FileMaker and little known Film Noir star Dominique LePortal , a story worthy of the hard-boiled dean of detective fiction, the late great Dashiell Hammett

4th Place, Ken Newell (http://fmpug.com/members_download.php? filename=devconpass_pugpimp.pdf&free=true)
Prize: $200 USD

Read Ken's open and honest Top 10 reasons why he is the #1, uncontested, never to be challenged, king of all Pug Pimps! Where is this m! an's Pimp cup?!

5th Place, Kate Lee (http://fmpug.com/members_download.php? filename=devconpass_inutero.pdf&free=true)
Prize: $100 USD

Read the sweet pleadings from this yet to be named, still in utero author whose days and nights are filled with visions of FileMaker-covered sugarplums. This little one has skills!

Important note, please read: Sinc e this promotion revolves around DevCon it's about helping people get to DevCon and (now) supporting members while they're at DevCon -- the prize money will be awarded to all runners-up (2nd 5th Place) at the FMPug DevCon booth. That means (in plain English) you must be in attendance of DevCon (or at least be at the hotel during DevCon) to grab the loot. The winning contestants will be required to notify FMPug of their decision to attend DevCon by June 1st, 2008.

OTHER NOTEWORTHY ENTRANTS -- #6 THROUGH #9 (http://fmpug.com/members_download.php? filename=devconpass_notable.pdf&free=true)
With so many witty entries, it's only right to share their clever eloquence with the masses. We've gone ahead and also posted the remaining contestant entries RANKED 6-9 (again, in homage to FileMaker 9). We can't emphasize their entertainment value enough go have a quick read of these stories, they're chock-full of chuckles!

[ANN] The DevCon Scheduler is back for 2008. Stay informed, on-time and on-track!

03/28/2008

Orlando, FL – 27 March 2007

The DevCon Scheduler is back for 2008. Stay informed, on-time and on-track!

http://www.fmpug.com/devcon
FMPug.com, the leading FileMaker-centric networking community unveiled their 2008 DevCon Scheduler today; marking the follow-up to the successful introduction made in 2007. The Scheduler enables any/all attendees the ability to see the entire conference schedule, including all applicable details and a snapshot of the conference wing’s floor plan directly on their respective web-enabled device. Last year the Scheduler was targeting attendees with the then newly launched Apple iPhone, however this year the interface has been redesigned to look its best on any web-enabled device. As it relates to the redesign and bringing all web-enabled devices in to the fold, Andy Gaunt, Founder of FMPug.com had this to add:

“My personal love affair/bias toward the iPhone aside, I wanted to ensure the Scheduler could be successfully utilized and look equally ‘cool’ on any web-enabled device. After all, we can’t play favorites when it comes to keeping these attendees organized, on-time and heading in the right direction.”

Andy went onto explain that all attendees will be able to view the schedules and floorplan, however an additional feature has been added for members of FMPug which allows them to log-in and record their personal schedule of conference sessions.

“We had to add something a little extra special for our members. Using the assigned code from their FMPug Member Page, they’ll be able to log-in once, bookmark that page and maintain their entire schedule for conference sessions. Registrations, overviews, lunches, and dinners will be available at their finger tips without the need to dig through page after page of information or cut and paste applicable details to their respective calendar program.”

FMPug fully expects the Scheduler to once again be well-received by the attendees. Andy concluded:

“It was simply incredible to see the number of people last year wandering around DevCon studying their Scheduler. Between the email announcements, its honorable mention by FileMaker Corporate during the keynote presentation and attendee word-of-mouth, we were thrilled to witness its success first-hand! I knew I would be bringing it back with a vengeance for 2008. With the growing success of the iPhone and the great feedback received from people who actually used the Scheduler, I fully expect to double the number of attendees roaming around studying it intensely! It will be exciting to see.”

FMPug’s 2008 DevCon Scheduler is available to everyone and anyone who might be attending DevCon, simply visit http://www.fmpug.com/devcon. Details on how-to take advantage of the personalized scheduling feature (available only to members of the FMPug community) will be posted on the FMPug Member Homepage. The DevCon Schdeuler is powered by FileMaker Server 9 Advanced and coded using the FileMaker PHP API.

Meet Your (potential) Macbook Air
Just announced at this year's MacWorld, the MacBook Air is the world's thinnest notebook on the market. Perfect for that long flight, presenting to clients or just lazing on the sofa. What better way to show how we "cair" about our membership than offering you the chance to win this great piece of technology (you must be an active member and present at DevCon to be eligible to win).

Infrastructure for FMPug.com is provided by our friends at dbdom.com who provide dedicated FileMaker, Web & Email Servers for FMPug.com. dbdom.com is just one of many FMPug discount providers offering members savings on their products.

It's that time of year - we're planning the Women of FileMaker get together for DevCon. It is tentatively scheduled for noon on Monday, July 14th, and is open to any female attendee (sorry, guys). It is being hosted by AppleSauce Productions, dbVisionWorks, possible Solutions, and Cross Platform Solutions.

If you're interested in meeting other women who develop and work in FileMaker, please R.S.V.P. to Joyce Lillemon Boschert directly (joyce@databasesandtraining.com). There's no charge for the lunch, just an opportunity to talk to women who enjoy FileMaker as much as you do.

Feel free to share this with anyone who may be interested.

FMDiff offers 10% discount to FMPug members

02/14/2008

FMDiff joins the FMPug Vendor Network. Welcome Winfried and we thank you for your support of the FileMaker community. - FMPug members save 10%

FMDiff is a developer tool that should be in everyone's FileMaker toolbox. If your solution suddenly exhibits strange behavior, how do you find out what happened to the files? How much time would you have to invest?

With FMDiff the basic test is done within minutes. Simply compare your backup or "Good Clone" against the solution. You immediately can tell whether anything has changed and where, either due to human or hardware error.

FMDiff compares your current solution against a previous one (or a Clone) and reports the differences. For the first time it is now possible to verify that the internal file structure (tables, fields, relations, etc.) is the same as at the time of delivery. This is especially important for sensitive areas like accounting or healthcare.

To access the discount code just log in to your member home page.

They also want videos of the sessions to be made available following the conference. 2006 FileMaker Excellence AwardFileMaker Excellence Award

For Outstanding Contribution to the FileMaker User Group and Developer Community

Andy Gaunt is the founder of FMPug - Uniting FileMaker Pro Users & Groups around the world. With numerous chapters and still growing, Andy has created a more “connective” philosophy, merging pre-existing user groups with newly formed locales and assembling them under a single umbrella. By creating this syndicate and managing it centrally, each group is now inter-connected through FMPug, allowing each user group to have expanded resources within their reach. Anyone who knows Andy will tell you that “Andy works tirelessly to spread the word about worthwhile FileMaker resources, products and training. His FMPug site has aggregated listings of FileMaker products and training courses that alongside his published technical articles and product reviews are part of a resource library that's becoming more and more important to FileMaker Pro users and developers."

In addition to running one of the liveliest FileMaker Pro User Groups, he's showing other user group coordinators how to do the same all over the world. Constantly evangelizing anything positive happening in the FileMaker universe, Andy personifies "outstanding contribution to the FileMaker community". “I have personally not experienced anyone with such selfless enthusiasm for the FileMaker community. He has successfully taken a fantastic idea and from that has significantly built a stable and open community in the past year alone. In addition, his efforts are forward thinking and utilize and challenge all of the latest FileMaker Web technologies. I consider Andy to be a leader in building and strengthening the FileMaker community". On a side note, Andy is using the latest technologies and techniques to make the FMpug website truly a calling card for what and how FileMaker can be used in a real web environment.
