March 23: Plugins

Overview. Jesse visits from 360Works to talk about their plugins (including the free ScriptMaster plugin) and how to put them to use. And in a ScriptMaster example, Angelo Luchi will speak about managing files, photos, and documents with Amazon S3.

Jesse Barnum will do a jam-packed demonstration of cool things you *can’t* do in FileMaker - unless you have the right plugin! More than a dozen plugins will be demonstrated to show how to easily:

  • Install plugins onto your users desktops without having to touch
their computer or even restart FileMaker
  • Super-easy audit logging with FileMaker 10 script triggers, with
    color-coded changes highlighted!
  • Search the text of PDF documents inside FileMaker
  • Grab files and images from a MySQL database, gmail account, and FTP
    server
  • Suck the contents of a web page and all of its images into FileMaker
    fields
  • Send an HTML-formatted e-mail message, with a link to trigger a
FileMaker script from the email viewer
  • Much, much more!
  • This will be a fun, fast-paced, informative session - questions and discussion are welcome, which will hopefully go in some new and surprising directions.

FMPug members will be eligible to win a raffle for one plugin of their choice.

    About the speaker:

Jesse started writing screen savers on his Apple IIe at age 12, and immediately fell in love with computer programming. His database experience goes back to PFS:File in the early 1980s, but he started writing databases with FileMaker Pro version 2.1 in 1992. He founded 360Works in 1996, and created a niche integrating FileMaker and Java for organizations like NASA, the US Marines, and Omnicom. Jesse and his team have created numerous FileMaker extensions including SuperContainer, ScriptMaster, and AdminAnywhere. Jesse hosts, organizes, and frequently presents at the Atlanta FileMaker Developers group. He has been a speaker at the 2008 FileMaker Developer Conference, the Adatasol podcast series, and FMPug chapters around the country. He is certified in FileMaker 7, 8, and 9, and is a platinum member of the FileMaker Business Alliance.

    RSVP for this meeting today!

Angelo Luchi from The Drooling Dog will also be offering a short presentation on working with files and images: going beyond container fields. You’ve probably heard all of the hype about Amazon Web Services. Maybe you haven’t, but are looking for a central place to load shared files linked to your FileMaker Solution. Angelo will go over how to use Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) with your FileMaker solution as well as backing up your FileMaker solutions to S3. Very cool.

Angelo’s technique uses the free ScriptMaster plugin from 360works, so some see what you can do with free!

SeedCode will be springing for Pizza, so come hungry! And don’t forget our new location at Group Health Cooperative. 320 Westlake Ave N, Seattle, WA 98109.
