Aug 23 - DevCon Wrap Up

DevCon Wrap Up

One of the best meetings of the year; we’ll talk about what we saw and what we missed at DevCon 2010 in SanDiego. If you were there, come to share. If you missed it, come to catch some of what went on at probably the best DevCon in a long time.

July 26 - Matt Navarre & FMGo

The Evolution of Search

Overview. Matt Navarre of MSN Media will be speaking on The Evolution of Search.

We live in the age of Google, and work in the land of FileMaker.

User expectations of how search works in a database has changed over the years, and as developers, we have both followed and led that shift. We’ll discuss some different search techniques that have been successful, and some that no longer are. We’ll look at Google search, and learn how close we can get to that within a FileMaker system.

To cover that ground, our discussion will include:
• Standardizing on single-field search
• The new QuickFind feature in FileMaker Pro 11
• Anatomy of a Google search
• Other tools such as Bing and Wolfram Alpha
• Commercial products such as fmSearchResults and ScriptMaster
• Different methods of ranking results
• Multiple-datatype search
• Mini-search tools to replace value lists

Matt Navarre is a regular speaker at DevCon, FBA Platinum, host of the FileMaker talk podcast, and author of fmSearchResults.

FileMaker Go for iPhone and iPad

In light of FileMaker’s recent announcement…
http://www.filemakertrial.com/go/
…we’ll take half the meeting to discuss FileMaker Go for iPhone and iPad. We’ll pass around a few examples in case you haven’t gotten your hands on it yet, and we’ll talk about what we’ve learned so far in this very exciting first week.
Matt Navarre and John Sindelar will co-presnet this section after Matt’s presentation on FileMaker Search techniques, and we’ll open it up to general discussion and Q&A.
This is a game-changer. Come see why.

Pizza and soft drinks provided if you RSVP.

Very informal, doesn’t have to be fancy. Here is a good way to think about it: If you’re really interested in it, other folks in the group likely are as well.

So post a comment below and get involved.

April 26 - Developer Tools: Inspector 3 and More

Overview. Vincenzo Menanno of FM::Nexus will be speaking.

Developer Tools: Inspector 3 and More

FM::Nexus Inspector is a widely used diagnostic tool for troubleshooting and improving the quality of FileMaker solutions. In this presentation, you will see the next release of Inspector with full support for FileMaker Pro 11. Redesigned from the ground up, this tool is full of features that help the developer stay on top of any FileMaker project, including powerful new Quick Find-based searching. Performance was one of the main goals of this new release, and I will show how it stacks up against the prior version. Come and discover what this new version of Inspector is all about and how it can you help you with your FileMaker development from start to finish—debugging, documenting, security and so much more.

As an added bonus I’ll demo our FOCUS framework that we use as a starter file for many of our projects, also updated for FM 11. You’ll see how quick and easy it is to get a solution up and running with this feature-packed framework. Even if you don’t end up using FOCUS, this presentation will get you thinking about ideas and techniques to use in your future projects.

Last but not least, you’ll hear a brief update on the latest features in the FM::Nexus Web Services Plug-in for integrating FileMaker solutions with other systems and services.

    Jan 25 - What’s Faster

Overview. Jason Young of MightyData LLC will be speaking.

    “What’s Faster”

As FileMaker developers, we know that there are often several different methods to accomplish the same task. Is there a significant difference in the performance of these methods? As we continuously try to improve the solutions we deliver, we need to examine some conceptions (and misconceptions) of what really is faster. Some of these common operations have been put through actual time trials. In this session we’ll review the different methods used, as well as their results. In doing so, we’ll establish some standards for developing solutions that perform with optimal speed, as well as a methodology we can use for future comparisons.

Jason Young is a certified FileMaker developer and FileMaker authorized trainer. He has been working with MightyData LLC since the summer of 2009. Previously, Jason had been working with FileMaker as both an in house developer and consultant since the early part of the decade. Jason began his career in the manufacturing world, but as with many developers, continues to expand his experience into new industries. In 2007 Jason became a FileMaker authorized trainer, and has taught multiple classes in Seattle and Dallas, as well as being a regular contributor to the Seattle chapter of FMPug.
