Jan 25 - What’s Faster

Overview. Jason Young of MightyData LLC will be speaking.

“What’s Faster”

As FileMaker developers, we know that there are often several different methods to accomplish the same task. Is there a significant difference in the performance of these methods? As we continuously try to improve the solutions we deliver, we need to examine some conceptions (and misconceptions) of what really is faster. Some of these common operations have been put through actual time trials. In this session we’ll review the different methods used, as well as their results. In doing so, we’ll establish some standards for developing solutions that perform with optimal speed, as well as a methodology we can use for future comparisons.

Jason Young is a certified FileMaker developer and FileMaker authorized trainer. He has been working with MightyData LLC since the summer of 2009. Previously, Jason had been working with FileMaker as both an in house developer and consultant since the early part of the decade. Jason began his career in the manufacturing world, but as with many developers, continues to expand his experience into new industries. In 2007 Jason became a FileMaker authorized trainer, and has taught multiple classes in Seattle and Dallas, as well as being a regular contributor to the Seattle chapter of FMPug.

Nov 16 - Don Levan

Overview. Don Levan of Vanguard Custom Softwarea will be speaking.

“Small Things Loosely Joined”

Don Levan, President of Vanguard Custom Software in NY (formerly of Small Co.) presented an early version of this at Pause On Error in NYC and it was one of the most popular and most-discussed sessions. “Small Things Loosely Joined” is about programming best practices in other environments and the way those ideas can be used to improve development in FileMaker. Don says we will look at the ideas developed to improve software quality, increase code reuse and portability, and improve programmer efficiency and flow. Very cool stuff and you won’t want to miss it..

Bob Majors is baking lasagna for everyone (thank you Bob!!), so please RSVP so that we can get an accurate count.

Certification Study Group

Shannon Butler suggested forming a study group for those working toward FileMaker 10 certification. Everyone at our August meeting seemed pretty enthusiastic, so I hope this happens.

This can easily be self-organizing: comment on this page to suggest ideas, meeting times, and logistics.

August 24: DevCon Debrief

Another informal meeting with lots of opportunity for Q & A, members who got out to DevCon will come back to tell us what they’ve seen and what they’re putting to use.

RSVP here so we know how much pizza, etc. to bring.

See you there!

Files from our July 27 “Open Mic Night”

Jason Young is offering his cool Snapshot & Restore demo as a free solution for us. Very Cool!

And Angelo Luchi has uploaded the slick drag and drop URL Shortener he demoed for us.

Both files are completely unlocked.

Thanks very much to Angelo and Jason!

July 27: Home Grown

This will be kind of an informal meeting.

The Seattle FileMaker scene is getting more and more robust, and we’ll open the projector to anyone who has something they want to share, work on, fix, or cry about.

Phil Smith is threatening to make it, so if it comes to crying, you’ll have a sympathetic shoulder.

I’ve spoken to few folks with things to share so this should be a very interesting meeting.

See you there. - John
